Mission:
We empower neighborhoods by creating a place where everyone belongs, works together and has the resources they need to thrive.
Description of Organization:
Community Schools are public schools that provide services to help students, educators, families and neighborhoods thrive.
Community Schools are intentionally located within the most marginalized areas of Knox County to serve those with the largest need where it matters most.
Community Schools is based on the belief that academic performance is affected by what happens outside the classroom. United Way of Greater Knoxville strives to remove these obstacles with the help of its network of 393 partnerships.
Education Programs:
Community Schools work closely with local organizations to connect students with enriching educational experiences both during and after school. They organize field trips to cultural sites, nature reserves, and on-campus interactive activities that bring classroom lessons to life and strengthen students' connection to their communities.
In addition, Community Schools help link students to after-school programs and seasonal camps that promote academic enrichment, sports, arts, and life skills development. These programs, offered by trusted local organizations, provide students with a safe and supportive environment to continue learning, explore new interests, and develop skills outside of school hours.
Placemaking:
Community Schools convene partners to support outdoor spaces designed to enhance the learning experience, increase safety, and foster a deeper connection to the environment. Whether it’s an outdoor garden, a dedicated learning area, or a walking path or trail, these thoughtfully designed spaces provide students, educators, and families with opportunities to engage with nature, promote physical well-being, and inspire creativity. By integrating outdoor placemaking into the school environment, we create dynamic, hands-on learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom, enriching the educational journey for all.
Educator Professional Development:
Community Schools work in partnership with local organizations to offer tailored professional development opportunities for teachers and educators. These programs are designed to enhance teaching skills, promote innovative instructional strategies, and support educators in meeting the unique needs of their students. By collaborating with experts in various fields, Community Schools help provide educators with the tools, resources, and training necessary to thrive in the classroom. Whether through workshops, mentorship, or specialized training sessions, these initiatives ensure that teachers are equipped to deliver the highest quality education and foster a positive, supportive learning environment for all students.
